Don has been inspired by many painters throughout time incl. Picasso, Modigliani, Mondrian, Matisse, Cezanne, Braque, Van Gogh and others of their style. Don’s collection today includes close to 300 paintings.
Don started to exhibit his art at the Upper Esplanade at St. Kilda in Melbourne in 1970 until 1990 when he built his own gallery at Sorrento. He was influenced by the cubist movement but disappointed to see a cubist painting in a square frame. Thus he invented the term Total Art, “completely changing the face of art”, claiming cubism must be in a cubist frame which has always been a characteristic of Don’s paintings.
Don's older paintings (up to ~1990) are oil paintings but these days he's using acrylic paint. Some of his paintings are utilizing a technique he calls "panel imaging" (3D layering) and others pertain to "copular art" (where the background penetrates through the subject matter - with the sole idea of changing the face of art).
Don's art is somewhat unusual, witty and sometimes startling. In Don's words: Change is ever present - as you open your eyes to see something new - then open your mind and be SURPRISED. Don Johnson art is Art with a difference, showing a new visual direction. Seeing is believing.
